Introduction
 

Like sands through the hour glass, so are the days of our lives...You are about to embark on a journey through the tragic world of Antigone.  Antigone, the Princess of Thebes, has broken a law created by her uncle, King Creon.  As a result of a series of tragic events, Creon's niece, son, and wife end up dead.  It will be your job to hold a criminal trial for the king and determine his guilt or innocence.

The Task

For this project, you will act as part of a defense attorney team, prosecution team, or jury on the trial of Creon.  In order to accomplish this task, you will need to research the myth surrounding this drama, the beliefs and values of the ancient Greeks, and the principle Olympian gods.  The end product will be a mock trial that will determine Creon's fate

TheProcess

To accomplish the task, you will first be assigned a role (defense attorney team, prosecution attorney team, Ismene, Creon, Sentry, Teiresias, Choragos, or one of the principle Olympian gods or goddesses, which is the jury).   Once assigned a role, follow the steps that apply to your role.  A hard copy of all your required work will be organized in a 3 ring binder in the order as it is completed.

Defense Attorney Team:

It is your job to develop a plan of defense for Creon.  His life is in your hands.  In order to accomplish this, you will need to do the following:

  • Read the play (we will be doing this in class)
  • Create a mask that accurately represents your character (these will be worn during the trial)
  • Research courtroom procedure in conjunction with the prosecution team
  • Organize and present research in the form of a PowerPoint (print a hard copy for your portfolio)
  • Create a list of witnesses in the order in which the witness will be called
  • Create a list of questions to ask each witness
  • Create an opening and closing argument of no more than one page in length

Prosecution Attorney Team :

It will be your duty to develop a plan of attack for prosecuting Creon.  He is guilty and must be punished!  To insure justice is served, you will need to do the following: 

  • Read the play (we will be doing this in class)
  • Create a mask that accurately represents your character (these will be worn during the trial)
  • Research courtroom procedure in conjuction with the prosecution team
  • Organize and present research in the form of a PowerPoint (print a hard copy for your portfolio)
  • Create a list of witnesses in the order in which the witness will be called
  • Create a list of questions to ask each witness
  • Create an opening and closing argument of no more than one page in length

Bailiff

  • Read the play (we will be doing this in class)
  • Create a mask that accurately represents your character (these will be worn during the trial)
  • Research the playwright, Sophocles and his theater (see also pg. 489-491 in Adventures inAppreciation)
  • Organize your research into a 1-2 page report and present in one of the following methods:  PowerPoint w/ pictures, original video, or oral report in character (a visual aid is required)


Creon:

You are the defendant.  While awaiting trial, you will be expected to do the following: 

  • Read the play (we will be doing this in class)
  • Create a mask that accurately represents your character (these will be worn during the trial)
  • Research the political structures of ancient Greece (be sure to include information on the role and history of plays)
  • Organize your research into a 1-2 page report and present in one of the following methods:  PowerPoint with pictures, original video, or oral report in character (a visual aid is required)


Witnesses:

In order to understand your role in this awful tragedy, you will obviously need to read the play.  We will do this in class.  In addition to this, you will need to create a mask that accurately represents your character (these will be worn during the trial).  In addition, each witness will be expected to research an aspect of ancient Greek culture.  This research will need to be organized into a 1-2 page report and presented in one of the following ways:  PowerPoint with pictures, original video, or oral report in character (a visual aid is required).  These are the topic assignments:


Jury:

You are the members of the jury.  The jury consists of the Olympian gods and goddesses.  Therefore, your job will be to research yourselves.   Who are you?  What is your role in Greek mythology?  This research  will be organized into a 1-2 page report and presented in the form  of a PowerPoint with pictures , an original video or an oral presentation  in character.  In addition, you will need to create a mask  that accurately represents yourself to wear during the trial.  The Olympian gods and goddesses      are as follows:

Conclusion

Congratulations!  You have successfully completed the WebQuest.  Remember that we will be dramatizing a trial for Creon, and you will need to draw on all of your newly acquired knowledge in order to simulate the characters of Antigone.  See you in court!
