Let's Meet Jan Brett

     a WebQuest for (second grade) (language arts)

Introduction

If you have read the story The Mitten or TheHat, then you know Jan Brett wrote these stories.  She has written many other books you may know.   If you would like to learn more about Jan Brett and her stories, you must do some detective work.  Put on your detective hat and find out more about Jan Brett.


The Task

Your task is to find this information about Jan Brett.  You will need to do five of the nine tasks:

  • Who does Jan Brett go flying with?
  • What number does Hedgie wear on his Blue Angels uniform?
  • On the October 1999 calendar page, what color are the shorts the mouse is wearing?
  • Complete a word scramble with a buddy.
  • Make a flag using the flag key (alphabet guide).
  • What are two reasons why people wear hats?
  • Write a friendly letter to Jan Brett telling her about your favorite book.
  • Find out what Annie used to make her corn cakes.
  • Write the titles of three other books by Jan Brett.

The Process

You and your buddy have to do numbers 1, 3, 4, and 7.  You need to choose one more task, also.

1.  Please find out who Jan Brett went flying with in her video.
2.  Use Jan Brett's web page to find out what number Hedgie is wearing on his uniform. Be sure to look
     in the same place you found the answer to number one.  Clue: Look for a page to color.
3.  Jan Brett made a calendar for 1999.  Look to find out what color shorts the mouse is wearing
     in the October artwork calendar.
4.   Find a word search that Jan Brett made.  You will need to do the word search with your
     buddy. The words are from The Hat.   Go to Barnyard Word Scramble and print this page.
5.  Make a flag using your name.  You will need find the grid sheet to color your flag.  First, write
     each letter of your name on each blank line. Use the Alphabet Flag page to find the flag that matches
     letter in your name.
6.  Write on your paper two reasons people wear hats.  You will need to go to Hat Quiz page.
7.  Write a friendly letter to Jan Brett about your favorite story.  See the Friendly Letter page.
     Choose a form to use for your letter. Click on the form you want.  Print one page to write on.
8.  What did Annie use to make her corn cakes?  Look for Projects page to help you.
9.  Write down three other books by Jan Brett.



Evaluation

You and your buddy can earn up to 52 points for this quest.

  • If you give the correct name you earn five points.
  • If you give the correct color of the mouse's shorts, you earn five points.
  • The points you earn depend on the number of words you get correct.
